I grew up with Kain Pelikat. It wasn’t just fabric—it was a part of my daily life.
As a kid, I spent hours at Pekan Rabu, Alor Setar, Kedah, helping my grandfather and uncle sell it, watching generations of men wear it with pride.
But as time passed, something changed. Kain Pelikat, once a symbol of tradition, started to fade. It was seen as outdated, inconvenient, and forgotten by the younger generation.
Life took me in a different direction. I pursued Computer Science, then Aircraft Engineering (Mechanical), and later earned an Aircraft Engineering License (Electrical).
My studies took me to Scotland for three years, where I discovered something that changed my perspective—the kilt industry.
There, a simple piece of fabric had been transformed into a luxury product, a national icon worn with pride. It made me ask: Why can’t Kain Pelikat be the same?
But before I could even think about making that change, my life took an unexpected turn.
During my studies, I was diagnosed with cancer. Everything stopped. The fight was brutal, but I survived. I lost my hair, but I gained something far greater—a new perspective on life.
I realized that time is too precious to wait. If I wanted to make a difference, I had to start now.
And that’s when I returned to my roots.
I looked at the Kain Pelikat I loved and saw its flaws—no pockets, hard to wear, easy to slip. In today’s world, where we always carry our phones, pockets are a necessity.
And the biggest problem?
Most Kain Pelikat in Malaysia weren’t even made here anymore. The market was dominated by imports from Indonesia and India, and our own cultural identity was disappearing.
So I decided to change that.
With the support of my wife, Dr. Fatin, who shares my vision, we created Flapwrap—a modern, practical, and truly Malaysian-made evolution of Kain Pelikat. Functional. Stylish. Iconic.
Think about it—
Japan has the Kimono.
Arabs have the Robe.
India has the Saree.
Malaysia? We have Kain Pelikat.
And it’s time to bring it to the world.
Our first milestone is Flapwrap X Tun Dr. Mahathir, the debut of the Leader Series Collection, honoring the visionaries who shaped Malaysia.
This isn’t just fabric. This is heritage, innovation, and identity—reborn.
